Hydrogen production from methanol, a new way for hydrogen energy application

With methanol as the raw material, the small methanol reforming hydrogen production equipment is highly integrated with the fuel cell, and the hydrogen is produced and used immediately, which can realize instant hydrogen generation and power generation. "One liter of liquid hydrogen (which needs to be condensed to minus 253 degrees Celsius) has only 72 grams of hydrogen. One liter of methanol reacts with water to release 143 grams of hydrogen. The hydrogen production of one liter of methanol is twice that of one liter of liquid hydrogen." said Liu Ke, a foreign academician of the Australian National Academy of Engineering and dean of the School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship of the South University of Science and Technology. "Liquid fuel has low transportation cost and is also convenient for long-term storage, which is the advantage of liquid energy."

Liu Ke said that mankind has invested in the construction of liquid fuel infrastructure, which will not be easily abandoned. The methanol hydrogen production line can make good use of existing gas stations and other facilities. It can be seen that the methanol online hydrogen production system has obvious advantages in scale and strong compatibility. It can use the existing infrastructure to effectively avoid some commercial bottlenecks.

In addition, Liu Ke believes that methanol energy has ushered in a good development opportunity. At this stage, methanol can be used as a standardized raw material for energy, fuel, chemical and other industries. In the long-term development process, methanol will also be highly compatible with renewable energy. The same set of methanol storage and transportation infrastructure can meet the short-term and long-term needs at the same time. "The liquid form has the advantages of high energy density, large-scale transportation, and easy to realize low-cost trans-sea transportation. It is a development direction of other renewable energy in the future."
